Most companies have reached an “intermediate or advanced level” of cloud usage. More than half (54%) of organizations are at an intermediate or advanced level of cloud use.

Cloud-enabled business transformation has become a priority. This is as organizations grapple with global supply chain issues, cybersecurity threats, and geopolitical instability. All organizations of all sizes and vertical markets turn to the cloud. With this, they guarantee flexibility and resilience in facing these challenges. However, small and midsize businesses have driven investment in cloud infrastructure services to support workload migration. Also, data storage services and cloud-native applications. Developing.

Cloud-based data warehouses, data lakes, and lake houses played a prominent role in 2021, with respondents (48%) citing them as a top initiative and top use case (57%). The hybrid cloud remains the preferred deployment model, as it has been since the 2020 survey. However, this year, the gap between hybrid and private clouds is much more significant. The hybrid cloud was chosen by nearly twice as many respondents (37.5%) compared to the pure public cloud at 20%. This year, it’s clear that the hybrid cloud is less of an “option” than a “necessity” and indicates that businesses aren’t ditching their on-premises systems even though they have increased their presence in the cloud.

Most companies have reached an “intermediate or advanced level” of cloud usage
Companies have good reasons for implementing this mixed deployment style, including regulatory compliance.

For these data-driven companies surveyed, nearly four in five respondents ( 79%) cited the complexity of data integration. Also, the accessibility of data and the adaptation of different data formats as the main barrier to becoming data-driven companies, followed by the lack of analytical capacity.

Data scientists also struggled in this survey. They were often cited for spending more time searching, accessing, and preparing data than analyzing it. More than 2 in five (44%) could not find, access, and analyze half or more of their data after adopting cloud technologies, and only 17% could leverage 75% or more of it.

T’s role in the cloud modernization process has also changed. In 2020, tech professionals focused on choosing the right cloud provider and managing the migration. But in 2021, these IT teams are more focused on getting the training they need to take their organization’s cloud systems to the next level. Other activities, such as cloud provider selection and migration planning, remain essential.

Companies use the cloud for various use cases, with reports and dashboards being the most popular ad-hoc analysis and self-service BI. However, respondents anticipate a shift toward data virtualization, data preparation, data quality, and blending.

These use cases vividly depict where many organizations are with their journeys to the cloud. First, it reflects that business stakeholders within organizations are ready to use their data better. Second, it shows that organizations are now looking to maximize their cloud systems with robust cloud-based repositories. The next step for many companies is to find a place to store the new data that they then begin to acquire.

One of the technological pillars of companies today is a storage system that guarantees data durability and continuous availability. Since data is more important and decisive for the company’s future, it is increasingly necessary to adapt and approach new storage solutions, such as Cloud Storage.

Cloud Storage is nothing more than Cloud storage. It is the solution that comes from combining storage with the benefits of the Cloud and going from having isolated hardware on-premises to using native cloud resources dispersed to create a native cloud storage system.

Cloud storage must be designed around a different set of principles to take full advantage of a cloud environment than those used in device-based systems.

The Advantages of Cloud Storage

The design of the cloud storage system will benefit from the advantages of working in the Cloud. One of them is flexibility since when it comes to processing the data to be stored, we are not limited by fixed resources (those we have acquired for the facilities). Still, the Cloud provides us with elastic resources, both for computing and memory and space. Of storage that we can use, expand or reduce in a matter of minutes.

Also, unused resources are not wasted but can be used for other tasks. When we need to consume more resources per transaction, we can do it easily as long as this brings some tangible benefit, such as better performance.

It should always be borne in mind that the resources are not fixed in cloud systems but can be expanded or reduced according to demand. That is the big difference between one approach and another.

In the same way that Cloud computing automates many of the management tasks that control resources, Cloud Storage automates the management of storage resources.

It also changes how data is managed, as these systems handle large data sets. At a low level, they are represented so that the data does not depend on the access methods used by the applications. The traditional separation between primary and secondary storage becomes redundant and expendable.

For those who have doubts regarding the security of Cloud Storage, it should be said that the same principles that guide security in the Cloud, in general, apply to this service. It must also be remembered that security is something that evolves. It is changing and has to adapt quickly to all the changes that occur, especially on the attacker’s side.

As providers of services in the Cloud, advisors for digital transformation, and partners of many companies, we know that the Cloud is an essential technology for any company, whatever its size and activity sector, to continue ahead in a market as competitive as the actual.

This, which seems so obvious, is not so for many companies, especially if they are small. In this type of company, the IT department can be reduced to a single person, it is even possible that there is no department as such, and there is usually a significant barrier when thinking that the expense of migrating to the Cloud can be limiting. Fortunately, we have already been concerned with breaking down most of the most common barriers to cloud computing.

A new study from Cloudreach and IDC, ” Cloud Trends 2021, ” surveyed more than 200 CIOs about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on cloud usage and digital transformation. Among the most common responses, 27.5% stand out who stated that large-scale migration to the public cloud was ” essential for the survival ” of their business.

This is so because, practically a year ago, in times of strict confinement, those who had physical infrastructure were at a disadvantage and, therefore, they struggle to execute the digitization completely so as not to see themselves again in a similar case.

What happened in 2020, especially what these companies were not prepared for at the time, will be part of the strategic planning for the next decade. Therefore, when considering the Cloud as essential, you have to carefully plan when things can go wrong.

For example, interruptions are rare in most services, but also in most cases, they are caused by human error. Therefore, there is a need to better plan for business continuity and disaster recovery systems, as well as to maintain consistent redundancy between different cloud services and providers.

In this way, more and more companies are becoming aware that Cloud Computing is not just an option, but that it is the path that we must all follow in order to maintain an operational capacity with resilience to any unforeseen event; scalable, so that our business can grow easily, or reduce the necessary resources in times of crisis; with very detailed cost control, thanks, above all, to the pay-per-use model.

We must not forget that, in addition, the regulations on data protection and privacy matters are increasingly demanding, so having a partner to guide us in these matters through the Cloud and the different contracted services will be essential. . The cost savings that companies can experience by not having the need to invest in experts on these issues is more than considerable and, without a doubt, one of the main reasons for opting for the Cloud.

Although at first when we hear about “the cloud” we can compare it with the definition of the Internet, it is not like that. The advantages of cloud computing go much further. It is a new model through which the user is allowed to use technology just when it is needed, without the need to install practically anything on the personal computer. Using the cloud also allows users to pay only for the technology they need at the time they are going to use it.

The beginning of cloud computing research is around 2006. In that year, large corporations such as Google or Amazon began to use the term cloud computing. The new term is used to define the new situation in which people access software, files, and data in general through the web more frequently. Instead of using their desktops.

To know more about cloud computing with Amazon, you can refer to the following article.

Cloud Computing, or cloud computing, comprises a series of technological services that are made available to any user. From anywhere. Virtually unlimited computing and storage power. Allowing to pay only for the use made of the service.

This new approach did not imply the creation of new technologies, but rather makes use of technologies such as the following:

  • Virtualization
  • Physical storage.
  • Storage on the web.
  • Data centers.
  • Software over service (Saas).
  • Web applications.
  • Web operating systems.

The company responsible for the servers will be in charge of their maintenance, of preserving the databases. And solve all the associated aspects: connectivity, monitoring, growth, security, updates, etc.

Cloud Computing Actors

The actors or participants in cloud computing are very diverse. The main players who benefit from the advantages of cloud computing are:

  • Suppliers or vendors: they are those who provide the applications and the technology, infrastructure, platforms, and information necessary to carry them out. For example Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Supplier Partners: Bring suppliers and customers into contact. Your basic task is to create services for the cloud and offer and support them to customers. For example
  1. Cisco devices: switches, routers, cabling, etc.
  2. HP or IBM servers.
  3. Antivirus applications, antimalware software.
  • Business leaders: they are in charge of evaluating cloud services to contract and implement them in their organizations.
  • End-users: are those who finally use the services offered through the cloud, either for free or by making some type of payment (periodic or punctual).

Examples Of The Use Of Services

Here are some examples of the use of cloud computing services as tools to change habits and models of use of information technologies:

  • Google:  This large corporation has been including more and more complementary applications to its search engine. An example is found in Google Apps. Where Google offers services as varied as email, calendar, calendar, or office software through the cloud. These services are offered for free in their most basic version. Official Google Drive page.
  • Azure Platform:  It is an application development platform through the cloud developed by Microsoft. It offers a set of functionalities as varied as:

Windows Azure:  Computing service for applications.

Windows Azure Storage:  Non-relational data storage.

SQL Azure:  Relational database in the cloud.

Windows Azure AppFabric:  Access control service

  • Amazon Web Services: It began by offering virtual storage and has gone on to create its own AWS (Amazon Web Services) infrastructure through which it offers global computing, database, analysis, application, and deployment services. All these services help companies to manage their information faster and at a lower cost in information technology. AWS official page.

In addition to the general advantages, in the business world, the advantages of cloud computing can be divided into five main groups: operational, economic, for the personnel, for the consumer, and for the provider.

Operational Benefits

Operational benefits are those that are produced by the way the company operates, its action protocols, and the processes they carry out.

The main advantages of operational cloud computing that cloud computing can bring are the following:

  • Reduced costs:  The payment of the technology is incremental, so the organization reduces costs in the long term.
  • Growing storage:  The storage capacity in the cloud is much higher than that of a private network.
  • Flexibility:  Applications can be easily tested and deployed.
  • Automation:  Applications are automatically updated so that the organization’s staff can not worry about the expiration of versions and their installation and maintenance.
  • Greater mobility:  Access to the cloud can be done from any location from which an Internet connection is available.
  • Greater productivity:  By not having to worry about updating, maintaining, and improving applications and servers, IT professionals who are on the organization’s staff can dedicate the effort and time saved on other more fundamental tasks.

Economic Benefits

  • Personnel:  One of the great advantages of cloud computing is that hiring them saves time and investment in human resources. Therefore, the company can choose to save costs by dispensing with professionals. And thus improve specialization and productivity. An increase in the work intensity of specialized personnel in IT (information technology) is achieved. These staff will work on fundamental tasks or redeploy staff to other competencies and/or departments.
  • Hardware:  Costs and investments in physical components such as processors, networks, storage devices, and units, etc, are reduced … If more functionalities are needed, just hire them from the corresponding provider.
  • Pay-per-use:  Cloud computing allows the company to pay only for those services it uses at any given time. So that a better estimate of the necessary resources is achieved. This allows a faster correction of excess investment in resources or its lack.
  • Rapid market penetration:  The cloud makes it possible to obtain services and applications adjusted to the business model of any organization more quickly and easily. In this way, a company can more quickly bring its services to the market. Adapting to the needs of the market. Since no new infrastructure is required. Rather, it is only necessary to vary the contracting parameters of cloud computing services.

Benefits For Staff

  • Even if there is a saving in terms of human resources of IT personnel, that does not mean reducing the headcount. The benefits of cloud computing for the staff of organizations multiply significantly with the use of cloud applications. Characteristics are the great ease of use and the low need for installation and maintenance.
  • This greatly reduces training and learning time for employees who will be using the applications.
  • Furthermore, it is common for applications used in web environments to promote more collaborative and participatory processes. In this line of work, these environments will promote teamwork. They will also promote the generation of incentives for workers.

Benefits For The Consumer

  • They do not require any type of installation. Nor maintenance of the software to use the services, which is one of the greatest advantages of cloud computing.
  • The deployment time is reduced. Since both servers and applications require little implementation time. Contrary to traditional methods.
  • Adherence to the Service Level Agreement or SNA (SLA): This is a written contract between the service provider and its client. In this contract, a certain quality level is set. By adhering to this type of contract, the consumer is guaranteed a minimum quality at all times. For example, if there is an error in the execution of the applications, with the adherence to the SNA the provider will be responsible for the costs and their repair.
  • Consumers will have updated applications at all times. Saving so much time, money, and employee training.

Provider Benefits

  • Operating environment:  The supplier provides its own operating environment. Consequently, you have the ability to manage, control, and optimize your infrastructure.
  • Revenue stream predictability:  Customers pay a minimum subscription fee for the use of services. This facilitates and speeds up the realization of income forecasts in the short and medium-term.
  • Market research:  With the data provided by customers and the use of the different services offered, the provider can carry out market research to better understand their behavior. Keep in mind that the software used by consumers is hosted on the provider’s servers. This makes data analysis easier.
  • Update schedule:  The vendor’s development team can more easily manage and schedule application and bug process management. So that updates, controls, and reviews are carried out continuously every certain period of time.
  • Empowerment of relationship marketing: Another of the great advantages of cloud computing. Thanks to these services, providers can foster and enhance relationships with their customers. This is due to the fact that the subscription payment system facilitates the establishment of relationships more quickly and favors loyalty.
