Defining what is Platform as a Service, or PaaS, is complicated. There is no concrete, canonical definition, and it is typically described as a cloud hosting platform with a set of automation tools for deployment and scaling , for application management and DevOps that can run on a shared infrastructure or on premises. .

Another more concise definition is that PaaS is a cloud computing model in which a provider delivers hardware and software tools to users over the Internet. These are, in general, tools that are necessary for application development. What is common is that a PaaS provider will host the hardware and software on its own infrastructure , thus freeing developers from having to install those resources in order to develop or run a new application.

PaaS does not replace the entire IT infrastructure of a company for software development, but the one necessary for those developments is going to be provided through the infrastructure hosted by a cloud service provider.

PaaS can be delivered through public, private and hybrid clouds to offer services such as application hosting and development. Other common applications of PaaS would be:

  • Development team collaboration.
  • Integration of web services Application.
  • Security of the information.
  • Database integration Application
  • Design and development of applications.
  • Test and deployment of applications.

The main advantage of PaaS is simplicity and convenience. Users can access the infrastructure provided by the service from anywhere through a web browser. On the other hand, as in other services in the Cloud, the ability to pay per use allows companies to control costs much better, saving a lot on infrastructure.

On the other hand, a service interruption or other alteration of the infrastructure can negatively affect customers and generate zero productivity lapses that will be extremely costly. This is rare, given the level of demand of current SLAs .

It is not a very flexible service in the face of internal changes. For example, if you change the programming language or choose to change the development tools. These changes can negatively impact users.

In short, PaaS offers developers a sufficient abstraction about the underlying infrastructure that allows them to develop their applications, test and verify them in secure environments, with all the advantages of cloud services.

The provision of software as a service is becoming increasingly important for many companies. In a post, Here we explain the most important reasons for using SaaS solutions.

Software plays an increasingly important role in many everyday products – such as the car and the camera. Companies that recognize and take this to heart can benefit from it. Therefore, more and more companies offer software and opt for software as a service. While it used to be almost exclusively software manufacturers, the software is now an elementary part of the business, for example for car manufacturers, mechanical engineers, sporting goods manufacturers, and companies from many other industries. In the case of machines, in particular, the software component is becoming increasingly important.

Of the various options for delivering software, software as a service, hosted in a public cloud such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), crystallizes as the ideal solution – for several reasons that apply equally to all industries.

Customers demand software as a service

Sales of SaaS continue to grow and, according to Gartner, are expected to total $ 151 billion in 2022. So companies hardly buy any software to roll out and operate on their own or rented infrastructure. They prefer to get them as a service. Opex instead of Capex is just one of many reasons for this. End customers are also open to new features that can be implemented with SaaS.

Task Management Software Service By SaaS

Software providers benefit from SaaS With effective Task Management software service Not only do customers like SaaS, but providers also benefit from the model. The changeover to this promotes company growth because among other things new markets can be opened up and new business models introduced: With the AWS Marketplace, a new sales channel is available for the applications, and the service share in the business increases through remote maintenance, licenses or software updates. Existing customers can switch to the SaaS model and remain with the company. And thanks to the continuous (monthly) income, the software provider has a good cash flow.

Develop applications faster with Software as a Service

Companies with long software release cycles that promise their customers to address their concerns in the next quarter or later run the risk of falling behind the competition. DevOps pipelines, on the other hand, rely on technologies such as continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI / CD). Frequent, small changes can be rolled out without downtime and in just a few days or weeks instead of months. Letting customer feedback flow into the next version enormously strengthens customer loyalty.

Use the advantages of the cloud: Faster, cheaper and more powerful

On-prem infrastructure often punishes companies for their own success. As soon as the current resources can no longer handle the peaks, upgrading is necessary to keep customer satisfaction at a high level. That means: renting data center space, buying, building, operating, and maintaining hardware. This not only costs money but also time and personnel. By using the cloud, SaaS providers simply obtain the computing power themselves as a service, thereby reducing their costs and scaling faster. In addition, they automatically pass on the scaling performance seamlessly to their customers. Only what is used is paid for, and customers always have an optimal performance at their disposal.

Finally capacities for innovations

Operating and expanding your own data center consume enormous resources. Switching to the cloud not only cuts costs, which frees up financial resources, it also relieves the staff. Both ensure that more can be invested in product innovations, which is essential for competitive advantages.

Before migrating to the cloud, there is a lot to consider, from the correct configuration of the cloud to cost optimization to the practical elements of the network and multi-tenancy architecture. Cultural change should not be neglected either. To ensure that they modernize intelligently and migrate to the cloud, companies can also rely on a SaaS enablement partner to support them on the cloud journey.

The SaaS (Software as a Service) is a relatively new concept that enables the company to subscribe to a remote software instead of acquiring them and having them installed on their own computer equipment.

We will take advantage of this article to simply present what is SaaS mode, what are its advantages and disadvantages? and what cloud computing is.

Definition of SaaS mode

The SaaS management allows a company to not install applications on its own servers but to subscribe to online software and pay a price that will vary depending on their actual uses.

Operation in SaaS mode

By using the SaaS model, the company will not host its applications and will not store its data internally.

It is therefore not necessary to directly acquire these applications and have servers to host them. In addition, the maintenance and updates of the applications will be managed externally by the service provider.

Business users will simply need a computer and online service access codes to be able to work.

The advantages of SaaS mode

Management in the SaaS model allows a company to benefit from many advantages:

  • no software to install on company hardware,
  • no data stored internally,
  • updating automatic applications,
  • the application can be used anywhere and anytime: just a simple internet connection and a computer,
  • management in SaaS mode provides a level of security generally higher than internal management.

The first two advantages cited by using SaaS mode also allow the company to save on these investments in computer equipment.

SaaS model is a service, the cost of which constitutes an expense immediately deductible from the result of the business, whereas an investment is deducted from the result through depreciation spread over several years.

The disadvantages of SaaS mode

The SaaS, however, presents some drawbacks, including:

  • the company is dependent on the service provider who provides the service, the latter owning the applications, and hosting the company’s data. What happens if you don’t have it? Filing for bankruptcy? or if a dispute arises?…
  • moreover, it will then be difficult for the company to change provider and transfer the data to it,
  • for applications often used by the company and by several users, the cost of operating in SaaS mode can be much higher than acquiring the application.

The differences with cloud computing

SaaS and cloud computing are two concepts that are similar but that does not mean much for the same.

The cloud computing (cloud computing) will allow the company to benefit from a complete IT infrastructure remotely to use applications. This operation, based on the pooling of resources, allows unlimited capacities (both in terms of storage and bandwidth).

The SaaS is meanwhile only to provide a subscription to an application via the Internet.

Cloud computing is therefore a much broader concept than SaaS and includes both the provision, via the internet, of the following 4 services: Applications, data storage, application execution, and infrastructure.

The cloud has facilitated widespread access to a multitude of cloud services of all kinds, both for individuals and businesses. The advantages of the cloud in this regard are enormous: economic savings, flexibility, mobility, and security are the most important.

Be it a private, public or hybrid cloud, there are dozens of specific services that cover very specific needs. We will begin by commenting on three of the most generic, and we will end by listing a wide variety of specialized services that will sound like you from now on.

IaaS, or Infrastructure As a Service

Through IaaS, the client accesses a service in which an infrastructure is put at his disposal over which he will have almost absolute control. This means that the hardware and software resources required for their own developments are made available to customers.

For example, the provider offers computing resources — machines — integrated network structures, security and backup systems, and any other necessary resources that, in addition, will be sized based on customer needs. This is a flexible service since the client can expand or reduce the contracted capacity according to their needs, but at the same time, it is indicated for system administrators.

The provider will be in charge of maintenance and guaranteeing security and will charge the user through a pay-per-use model.

SaaS, or Software As a Service

This service is best known to the general public. Through SaaS, we access fully configured and ready-to-use cloud applications. It is not necessary to have the knowledge to access this type of application, which can be, for example, office applications, webmail, cloud storage …

Thus, the customer should only hire the service or access it for free – if the option is given -, while the provider takes care of all additional tasks, such as providing storage space, updating the software, etc. , etc.

PaaS, or Platform As a Service

This service modality offers the client a development platform configured to work directly on it. This platform and environment will allow the development of applications and services based on the tools provided.

This type of service allows developers to focus exclusively on their main task, and leave the physical infrastructure and its administration to the provider.

Increasingly Specific Cloud Services

There are many other generic cloud services, such as FaaS — Functions as a Service — or CaaS — Container as a Service — but where there is variety is the number of more specific services, designed to meet a specific need. Let’s see some examples:

  • Analytics as a Service
  • Backup as a Service
  • Content as a Service
  • Desktop as a Service
  • Games as a Service
  • Network as a Service
  • Quality as a Service
  • Robot as a Service
  • Search as a Service
  • Security as a Service
